Instagram, Social Action and Archives

Ed Summers
Documenting DocNow

--

Dianne Weinthal is a recent graduate of the UCLA MLIS program, and has been working with a few members of her cohort on criteria to evaluate, circulate, and create social media in service of safe social action.

Their first platform focus has been on Instagram. We thought this could be a good opportunity for us in the Documenting the Now community to gather in an informal call to talk about the thinking that went into the work they have done so far. This is especially important as so much of the Documenting the Now’s work to date has focused on Twitter. While we expect some issues to remain constant across social media archiving platforms, others will differ since the affordances and algorithmic effects of these platforms are varied.

Their draft document they have been working on can be found at:

We will be meeting on August 11 at 9–10AM PT. If you would like to participate please email info@docnow.io with the subject “Instagram” and we will email you the Zoom link to join.
